The Louise Mazzaroli Cup will be held on Sunday 15th November, 2015.
The first Cup was held back in 2007 and was named after Louise Mazzaroli who was a pioneer in women’s football and female referees. Louise’s passion for Over 35s football was life held and until her passing on this day (11th November Remembrance Day) in 2011, Louise still believed in the adage that football is family and we should all come together as a community and embrace the game from a slightly more mature female perspective!
Louise was also an active referee with ESFARB and a strong supporter of female referees. An increasingly important part of the referee community, the loss of Louise has been felt throughout ESFA.
Since Louise’s passing, the Cup has become more important to women footballers in the Eastern Suburbs. It has become a day to honour Louise’s memory and to respect all that Louise strived for at ESFA. Louise was posthumously awarded ESFA Life Membership and ESFA Hall of Fame in recognition of her incredible passion and commitment.
For those who knew Louise, it would be a rare occurrence even as her cancer progressed, to not see Louise at a park stirring up the call to arms for over 30s Women’s football to be given greater credence and for the ESFA competition to embrace it. Season 2015 we were still bereft of an Over 30s Women’s football competition and we hope the ESFA Clubs will work toward this competition being implemented in 2016.
Louise played for many seasons with both Maroubra United and Queens Park along with other clubs and it is pleasing that the following Clubs have chosen to partake in the Cup on Sunday at Kik Off Frazer Park, Marrickville from 12:50pm:
- Coogee United FC
- Dunbar Rovers FC
- Maroubra United FC
- Queens Park FC
2014 saw Dunbar Rovers FC take out the Cup, which may have been a precursor to Dunbar’s women’s success in 2015!
The event is also firmly used as a fundraiser for Louise’s favourite charity Dreams2live4 . We have the following raffle prizes for our ladies and their supporters in the hope of raising much needed funds to make dreams come true for people living with metastatic cancer.
- Signed Sydney FC Jersey
- 4x tickets to a Sydney FC home game
- Autographed Tim Cahill book “Legacy”.
Even though Louise has gone, her wish to make dreams come true for so many will continue with each annual Cup.
We would love to see members of the extended ESFA football community to come down throughout the afternoon (sausage sizzle all day!) and support the Women of ESFA, salute and celebrate the memory of Louise and enjoy the football family.
