2018 Senior Grand Finals Weekend 2

In a truly incredible weekend of football commencing with Mother Nature refusing us the ability to play the O35 Championship Grand Final on Friday night and ending with our Masters (O45 Championship) going to extra time at Hensley, this one goes down in the history books for many reasons.

History was made by Coogee United AAM Championship, when they became the first team to secure victory in the ESFA Mens Cup, AAM Championship League and AAM Championship Champions. They now go on to represent ESFA in Champion of Champions to hopefully add that 4th Cup! A more than respectable achievement by Coogee.

Both Phoenix and Glebe Gorillas kept us massively entertained and in awe of the massive score line. With Phoenix constantly ahead and Glebe Gorillas catching up, the scores were level after 90 minutes at 4 all. A further 30 minutes of play and the scores were still even at 5 all. Was only the penalty shootout that separated the teams and an incredible match for all spectators to celebrate and remember. Let’s not even mention the entertainment of the spectators’ banter!

UNSW AA4 managed a treble as well winning ESFA trophy, League and Grand Final.

The sun finally came out for the first time over our 3 weekends of grand finals on Sunday and Heffron Park saw further penalty shootouts on Sunday in the O45 Division 2, showing once again how close some of our competitions are. Extra time was needed at both Hensley and Heffron on Sunday with our O45 Championship showing that 90 minutes is certainly not enough to separate the top 2!

We will be back at Hensley on Friday night to finish our Finals Series when Dunbar Rovers take on Pagewood Botany in the rescheduled O35 Championship Grand Final.

Congratulations to all our Champions for 2018, with special mention to Coogee United who played in 8 Grand Finals over the past two weekends and were crowned Champions in all of them.

We thank all our Clubs for making the past weekend such an exceptional occasion. With so many clubs involved, it was great to relax and seriously enjoy and celebrate the football.
