Men’s Premier League – Round 17 Preview

*previous rounds numbered incorrectly.

With 75% of PL fixtures played out of Heffron Park on Saturday, as well as a potential First Grade league win, the penultimate round of the season promises to be an exciting one.

Randwick City vs Glebe Wanderers, FG 3:00PM, RG 1:00PM, Heffron Park
Randwick couped a huge win over Phoenix last weekend and will be hopeful to continue their winning ways on Saturday. The Wanderers are only three points away from front-runners, Gorillas, with a win possibly bumping them up to top spot.

If Randwick RG want to end the season on a high, they will need a big win this weekend. Being 8th on the ladder separated only by goal difference, the squad will need the big boost in their remaining games.

The RG Wanderers also have the possibility of taking top spot this weekend with a big win and favourable results from the Dunbar/CBD game.

Glebe Gorillas vs Waverley Old Boys, FG 3:00PM, RG 1:00PM, Heffron Park
The Gorillas have a high scoring Wanderers hot on their tails (if Gorillas had tails), being only three points behind. However, no team has scored more than the Gorillas this season, having couped an impressive 42 goals so far. A win this weekend, as well as other results going their way could see Glebe Gorillas claiming the league title.

Waverley will be hoping to end their winning drought with a big upset this weekend. If they can put in a strong away performance, they can end their season on a high.

The story is very different in RG with Gorillas (3rd) only three points ahead of Waverley (4th). As both teams have games in hand, they may still have the chance to jump even higher up the ladder. With finals football almost secured, who will break their losing streak this weekend?

Coogee United vs Phoenix FC, FG 3:00PM, RG 1:00PM, Heffron Park
In FG, only one point and two goals separates these teams in third and fourth on the ladder. Both teams have also had a WWLW in their previous four games.

If Coogee want to remain ahead of Phoenix, they need to at least clench a draw in Saturday’s game. Phoenix have demonstrated an impressive defence this year having conceded the least amount of goals (16) in the league. On the contrary, Coogee have scored the second highest number of goals (41) this year making this contest a vey interesting one.

In RG there is a very similar picture with only three points and four goals separating the two in 5th & 6th, conversely with Phoenix ahead. Both teams have come off wins recently and will be ready for battle on Saturday. Mathematically, finals could still be possible bearing in mind catch up games in hand.

Sydney CBD vs Dunbar Rovers, FG 3:00PM, RG 1:00PM, The Domain
CBD still have many games yet to play and as such could make a jump up the table with some big wins. Dunbar have slipped further away from the top four with their close defeat last weekend, putting them six points behind Phoenix.

CBD RG have had a sting of strong performances picking up 7 points in their last three games. With multiple games left to play, maybe this team can still climb the ladder.

Dunbar are coming in hot off a massive 7-0 victory over the Gorillas last weekend to keep them two points clear of the Wanderers. Another win on Saturday may be enough to secure the league title, depending on other results.

Good luck to all teams!
