Men’s Premier League – Round 17 Preview

Unfortunately, most of Round 16’s matches were washed out or abandoned due to serious injury. We did however get three weekend results plus a Monday night catch up that caused a lot of noise! Here are the results from the last week:

FG Results
Dunbar Rovers 0 – 1 Glebe Wanderers
Coogee United 0 – 3 Glebe Gorillas

RG Results
Dunbar Rovers 0 – 1 Glebe Wanderers
Glebe Gorillas 1 – 2 Phoenix FC (round 5 catch up)

The order of the FG ladder remains unchanged; however, we are starting to see the Glebes running away at the top of the table. In the RG ladder, the Glebe’s are at it again, as The Wanderers surpass The Gorillas, yet both still chasing Dunbar for the top spot.

With glorious weather this week, we are hopeful all games will go ahead as scheduled tomorrow. Now let’s get into the Round 17 preview.

Sat, 30th Jul 2022

Sydney CBD vs Coogee United, FG 3:00PM, The Domain
CBD have a few catch up games to play which could see them off the bottom of the ladder with some big wins. Coogee FG need a big win this weekend to avoid pressure from approaching Phoenix and Dunbar.

Phoenix FC vs Randwick City, FG 3:00PM, RG 1:00 PM, Paine Reserve
If Phoenix FG want to remain in the race for finals, they need to secure at least a point this weekend. Having beaten Randwick twice on the previous two weekends, they will be full of confidence, particularly with their 5-0 aggregate score. Randwick FG have not had the best run of games recently with two points in their last five games, however they will be hungry to rectify things this weekend.

Phoenix RG had a huge result mid-week against Glebe Gorillas, with cheering being heard from miles away. As such they will be full of confidence leading into tomorrow’s game. Randwick RG have the upper hand after picking up four points against Phoenix in the previous two weeks. They will be keen to strike twice with another win.

Glebe Gorillas vs Dunbar Rovers, FG 3:00PM, RG 1:00 PM, Moore Park West 3
Finals football is very much still a possibility for Dunbar FG. With a win this Saturday, as well as other results going their way, they will surpass Phoenix for fourth place. However, a win for Glebe would almost be cause for popping Champagne, as they could become six points clear at the top, depending on the Wanderers result.

A HUGE game for Reserve grade with top spot on the line. If Dunbar win, they could go five points clear, however, should Glebe take the three points they could potentially take residence at the top.

Glebe Wanderers vs Waverley Old Boys, FG 3:00PM, RG 1:00 PM, Heffron Park Synthetic
The Wanderers have won 4/5 of their previous games, with 11 goals scored, and won’t be slowing down any time soon, as top of the ladder remains well in sight. They were also 5-2 victors in the last meeting against Waverley in Round 10.

Waverley have scored 12 goals across their last five games despite only securing four points. Demonstrating that they can find the net but have struggling to deny opposition, they will be eager to attain all points this weekend.

Only three points separates Wanderers and Waverley in Reserve Grade, whilst The Old Boys still have two games in hand. Assuming Waverley win all catch up games, as well as tomorrow’s contest, we may possibly see new residents at the top of the Reserve Grade ladder. However, after conceding 14 goals in their previous two games, they will need to rectify some defensive concerns.

Wanderers RG picked up a huge win against top dogs, Dunbar, last weekend to fuel them with confidence for the remaining games of the season.

Good luck to all teams!
