With the continued wet weather diminishing most fixtures last weekend, and already forcing many councils to close their fields early for the coming the days, we remain hopeful that this fixture may still proceed. Brazilian fields will host the Glebe Derby on Saturday afternoon. Last year, during the shortened season, the Gorillas ended the year somewhat triumphant having finished three places ahead of the Wanderers in third place on the MPL ladder. The Gorillas were also 2-1 victors in last year’s clash against The Wanderers in Round 9, making for a very tight match. This weekends derby fixture will be the perfect opportunity for both sides to make claim for the best of Glebe.
ESFA MPL Match of the Round
Glebe Gorillas vs Glebe Wanderers
Brazilian Field
Saturday 9th April
FG 3pm | RG 1pm
Here’s what Gorillas Manager Declan Moore had to say about the game:
“It’s good to be back to league action from what seems a life time ago from our last league game. Disappointing to have our game v WOB called off last week as the lads were more than ready to go. This week has that little more spark to it as we face the other Glebe. They’re as always a very strong, resilient, hard working team and is always a good game, played in the right way. Pre season has had a few set backs due to lads catching Covid and injuries but thankfully we’re looking a better.
The lads have done well so far in the FFA Cup and hopefully carry that into this weekends games. This year will probably be in my opinion the hardest season yet. Lads going back home to visit family which they haven’t seen since this pandemic started over 2 years ago plus players leaving from last year due to Covid. Fingers crossed we manage to get through this season with no hiccups and actually finish the season the right way.”
Here is what Wanderers Coach, Mark Cahalin had to say ahead of the fixture:
“With our game last weekend being cancelled due to wet weather, this is a great fixture to kick off our season. Gorillas are a strong side with some great players and it’s always a tough game against them so we will know the level we’re at after the game.
We’ve retained our squad from the last few seasons, added new players and have players returning from long term injuries. The guys have all worked hard in pre-season and are excited to get some league games under the belt – weather pending.”
Good luck to both teams and all other MPL teams competing this weekend.
