Women’s Premier League Preview – Round 16

Round 16 is another crucial weekend in the Women’s Premier League competition as it could help to determine how the finals fixtures shake out. We have one catch up game plus four Round 16 match ups. With teams fighting for a top 4 spot, and finals around the corner, teams will be hoping to either cushion their lead, or battle their way to the top.

Friday 22nd July – Round 5 catch up
Easts FC vs Sydney University Soccer Football Club, 8:00 PM, Gunyama Park Synthetic Field

Its Friday night lights in this Round 5 catch up game at Gunyama Park. Both easts and Sydney university have played 11/16 league matches so both teams will be keen to build on their current positions on the ladder.

If Easts can secure two wins this weekend, they could potentially jump into 5th spot on the ladder which would keep them in sight of finals leading into their remaining games.

A double win for Sydney University this weekend would give them breathing space in the top four.

Sun, 24th Jul 2022 – Round 16
Lokomotiv Cove vs Dunbar Rovers, 1:00 PM, Heffron Park Synthetic

Both Loko and Dunbar have excelled up the ladder last week into second and 5th respectively. With Maroubra creeping closely behind Loko on the ladder, and game in hand to play, Loko will want to further distance themselves with a big win on Sunday. Loko have proven themselves as a team that can find the net, being one of only two teams in the league with a positive goal difference.

Dunbar have had the most washout games so far in the WPL and would need to win most of them in order to reach the top 4, being seven points behind Sydney University (also with catch up games to play). Dunbar have had a mix of results throughout the season but proved a tough egg to crack in the opening round, the last time these teams met, having only lost by 1-0.

Waverley Old Boys vs Easts FC, 3:00 PM, Waverley Park Synthetic Field 2
It’ll be 6th vs 8th battling out at Waverley Synthetic on Sunday afternoon. Easts are several games behind their competitors but a big three points will see them off the bottom of the table, possibly into 5th depending on their Friday night game and other results. They have already beaten their opposition once this season and will be looking for the double.

Mathematically, Waverley will need to win all of their remaining games, as well as other results going their way in order to finish in the top four. Regardless, they have already proved a tough team to handle, having beaten two of the top four teams in previous games.

Sydney University Soccer Football Club vs Coogee United, 3:00 PM, Heffron Park Synthetic
Coogee officially won the league last weekend, however they won’t be slowing down anytime soon. They will be wanting to finish the season strong leading into the finals series and hopefully Champions of Champions.

Sydney University have very much everything to play for if they want to keep their top four spot. With many teams having multiple catch up games in their pockets, we may still see some movement in the top half of the ladder. A double win this weekend for Sydney University could see them jump to second spot, and still with catch up games in hand over those currently ahead of them in the ladder.

Maroubra United vs Randwick City, 3:00 PM, Chifley Reserve Field 2
11 points and a game in hand for Randwick City is what separates these two teams leading into Sunday’s game. These two teams have already met twice this year, with three points apiece and an aggregate score of 6-4 in United’s favour.

Maroubra are fighting hard to keep their spot in third on the ladder, only two points shy of second and one catch up game in hand over second place Loko.

Randwick will be coming off two big wins and full of confidence leading into Sunday afternoon. After leaving the bottom of the table, Randwick will want to continue their momentum all the way through to the end of the season.

Good luck to all teams.
