The Women’s Premier league kicks off this Sunday with another blockbuster match of the round. Coogee United and Waverley Old boys were also last year’s women’s league champions and runners up and will both be wanting to make a statement this weekend at Waverley Park. The WPL has adopted a new team in Lions FC making the top flight women’s league bigger than the men’s for the first time ever. Also, with the introduction of prize money for the first time in any ESFA Women’s league, the competition this year will be rife.

“After what seems like forever, we are loving playing football together again and can’t wait to get back to competitive matches. With 9 teams in the WPL this is year it’s a really exciting time for women’s premier league and no doubt there will be many great matches throughout the season. Coogee United’s WPL Manager and Head of Women’s football, Nigel Singh, had the following to say about his team:
“Like everyone before Round 1, we’re excited for the opportunities that the new season brings. The standard in Women’s Premier League has improved over the past few seasons and we’ve had to work really hard in the off-season to make sure we stay competitive with the top teams. We’ve lost 3 established starters in the off-season, so it will be interesting to see which players take their opportunities.
The aim here at Coogee United this season is to continue to improve each game and have lots of fun along the way.
We’re really excited to see how other Clubs have fared in offseason recruitment (rumour mill is strong) and are particularly keen to see the continuing evolution of Lokomotiv Cove and Easts from last season and Lions this season.”
