Giant Slayers & No Mercy – Into Rd 5 Australia Cup

In 2022 ESFA Club Waverley Old Boys FC reached Round 5 in the Australia Cup, narrowly missing an opportunity to advance to Round 6.

In 2023 we have two Clubs in Round 5!

We commiserate with Waverley who were unable to duplicate their feat for 2023 after a narrow loss to FNSW League Two Men’s side South Coast Flames on Monday 18th April with a 2-3 scoreline in their Round 4 clash.

This sets up Randwick City FC, the current titled giant slayers, to meet South Coast Flames in Round 5.

Randwick City FC in the biggest and greatest upset in Australia Cup NSW preliminary qualification history, now famously, knocked out FNSW Men’s 01 team St George City FA with an incredible 4-2 victory at Penshurst Park!

Randwick City have only been part of the ESFA Men’s Premier League competition for

St George scored the first goal in just 12 minutes however in the 16th minute after being awarded a penalty it was 1-1 with St George down to 10 men. On the 32nd minute RCFC are up 2-1 and then in the 34th minute is 3-1 to RCFC.

A strategic change in the second half saw St George come back to 3-2 in the 50th minute. Randwick held their nerve and in the 75th minute it’s 4-2 to Randwick. This is how the score remained and this resulted in the greatest upset and the greatest victory by an ESFA Club in Australia Cup history.

Congratulations to the lads from Randwick City FC and goal scorers Louis Keane, AJ O Connor, and Aaron Murphy with two.

We look forward to cheering the giant slayers Randwick City FC in Round 5 as they continue their exceptional campaign in highlighting the strength of football in the Eastern Suburbs.

Meanwhile Phoenix FC have paved a savage path since entering the Australia Cup in Round 3 and  are also into Round 5, after showing no mercy with a solid 9 nil victory over Roselea FC. With Phoenix remaining undefeated in MPL First Grade ESFA League sharing points with Randwick City FC also undefeated, can their winning streak continue when they meet Football South Coast club Bulli FC?

Congratulations to the lads of Phoenix and Round 4 Australia Cup goal scorers Andrew Shah, Jake Bradley, Alex Barry, Thomas Walsh (2 goals), Sam Burgess (hat trick) and Daniel Doherty.

In a serendipitous moment, Randwick City and Phoenix will meet in the ESFA MPL competition this Saturday 22nd April which is destined to be the match of the round!

Confirmation of venues for the Australia Cup Round 5 clashes for Randwick City and Phoenix will be advised shortly.
