Men’s Premier League Preview – Round 16

We’re almost done in the Men’s Premier League, with most catch up games complete and only three more rounds of football to play before finals. With a 10-point buffer for the top half of the reserve grade league, finals seem almost set. However, with plenty points still to be won, anything could happen. In first grade, top four is still very much in question, with many teams needing to secure multiple wins in the coming weeks. Only 9 points separates first and fifth so we may see some late movement in ladder.

Coogee United vs Glebe Gorillas, FG 3:00 PM, RG 1:00 PM, Heffron Park Field 5
Coogee plays host to a rampant Gorillas outfit this weekend at Heffron Park. Coogee FG spent the first half of the season at the top but have since dropped points, falling into third. However, with four games left to play, that top spot is still within reach. Mathematically, Coogee RG could turn things around if the odds are in their favour.

Both Glebe Gorillas FG and RG squads are flying high in first and second in their respective leagues, with a matching 28 points apiece. Wins for both teams will almost certainly cement their places in the top four. Coming off two wins for FG and three wins for RG, as well as 27 goals across the 5 games, the Gorillas will be difficult to tame.

Sydney CBD vs Randwick City, FG 3:00 PM, RG 1:00 PM, The Domain
In the last meeting of these clubs, Randwick triumphed in both grades and will be looking to make it 4/4. CBD RG enter battle off 4 points in their previous two games with the FG hopeful to build on their 8 points to finish the season on a high.

If Randwick can secure all wins in their remaining five games, finals football may just be possible. At the very least, they will be wanting to cause upset for all other teams competing for the top four.

Phoenix FC vs Waverley Old Boys, FG 3:00 PM, RG 1:00 PM, Paine Reserve Field 1
Phoenix FG have a 12-point buffer on Waverley leading into Saturday’s game, with their RG 14 points behind. Both Waverley and Phoenix have a real chance of at least one grade securing a top four finish, but they will need to leave it all out there this weekend, particularly with other clubs sniffing close by.

The last meeting between these clubs saw first grade sharing the points and Waverley’s RG securing a huge 4-0 win. Can the Old Boys repeat their early season success or will Phoenix turns things around this time.

Dunbar Rovers vs Glebe Wanderers, FG 7:00 PM, RG 5:00 PM, Heffron Park Synthetic
Dunbar RG are sat pretty at the top of their ladder with 10 wins, the most out of either grade. They may be safe in the top four, but top spot could still change. Glebe RG’s goal difference are all that separates them from fourth placed Waverley. Winning is a must to keep them in the finals race.
Dunbar FG are only three points shy of the top four, and 6 points behind Glebe who are sat in second. A win for either team will indeed shake things up on the FG ladder.

Dunbar prevailed in both grades in the previous match between these teams. Phoenix will not so easily succumb to the Rovers this weekend coming off 7 points between the two grades in the last two weekends.

Good luck to all teams.
